Growing a Culture of Learning (Part 6) - Growing Learner Support

What do you need to put in place to make trust, a growth mindset and empowerment happen?

Think strategies, processes, tools and resources. Establishing routines - habits, which comes from this list, saves time and energy.

Learners need to figure out what strategies work best for them, understand the processes that support learning and the tools needed to help guide them.

You’ve heard about the “gradual release of responsibility,” right? What if we think about it more like the gradual increase in responsibility? What would it take for that to happen with your learners?

Having processes in place so that learners know how learning works – etiquette for participating in an online discussion, for example--helps them contribute as much as they want/can. Self- and peer-assessment are examples of processes that help learners get feedback from multiple sources to support their ideas about what success looks like. Feedback might be supported by tools like a checklist, rubric or opportunities to collaborate with peers, such as Padlet.

Terry Heick tells us to show them, help them and let them. By modeling different strategies, learners can experiment and find strategies that work for them. You can teach them habits that help them learn.
