Growing a Culture of Learning (Part 1)

Culture exists in every group—classroom, department, community of practice, sports team, or group of friends. The culture of learning in these groups is about building relationships, beliefs, habits, and efficacy.

Let's think about a culture of learning as being a collection of mindsets, behaviors and skills that help build beliefs about ourselves. These beliefs empower us to engage and collaborate so that learning is learner-centered.

While many elements comprise a culture of learning, a handful rise to the surface:

  • Trust
  • Mindset
  • Empowerment
  • Support
  • Curiosity
  • Intentionality
  • Practice

These elements empower students to transform into learners. They foster self-regulated learners.

Explicitly growing a culture of learning means we are intentionally looking for ways to support learners in each of these 7 elements. You’ve been doing some of this already–either explicitly or implicitly.

Of the 7 elements, which is a strength of yours – one into which you have intentionally put effort? What’s one way you’ve used to build this element into the learning culture?
